Turns an Android phone into a 1080p30 wireless webcam for a desktop, streaming hardware-encoded H.264 over WebRTC into a local media server and out to OBS as a virtual camera.
The Challenge
The load-bearing requirement was that streaming survive screen-off and app-switching. Every browser-based approach fails this, because the browser gets suspended. A commercial app was tried first and dropped frames badly.
Our Solution
A camera-type Android foreground service keeps the capture pipeline alive when the screen is off. Before rewriting anything, the failing commercial app was instrumented to find out why — the evidence pointed at its TCP video path, which justified going to WebRTC rather than guessing. Ships lens switching from the notification, a live stats overlay, thermal auto-downgrade, and camera-steal detection with auto-resume.
Results
- Streaming survives screen-off and app-switching
- 1080p30 hardware-encoded H.264 over WebRTC
- Thermal auto-downgrade under sustained load
- Camera-steal detection with automatic resume
- Decision backed by an instrumented network post-mortem
