A live translation app for international families. Each person picks one language, speaks it, and hears everyone else in it. The organizer has an account; a relative overseas just taps a link and joins. Profiles, contacts, translated note threads, and cross-timezone scheduling with a dual clock so nobody has to work out the time difference.
The Challenge
Families split across countries stop talking for a mundane reason: the conversation is exhausting when nobody shares a language. Live translation is a latency problem before it is an AI problem — half a second too slow and people give up and go back to texting. And a grandparent who has to install an app and create an account will simply not show up.
Our Solution
A production translation agent runs one live session per speaker-to-language pair, publishing translated audio and captions per listener. Same-language pairs are skipped entirely, so they cost nothing. Guests join by link with no account. Scheduling math is property-tested against timezone and daylight-saving edges.
Results
- Production translation agent running on LiveKit Cloud
- Relatives join by link — no app install, no account
- Same-language pairs cost nothing
- Property-tested dual-timezone scheduling
